Altun Ha & the Olde Belize River

A full day out with lunch, this is an excellent example of the balance between the Archeology and Natural History that Belize has to offer.

Typically, the tour would leave Belize City by boat, heading North to the mouth of the river. Here Manatee are often found enjoying the rich feeding grounds. Onwards into the river and immediately the guide will be pointing out the prolific bird life and flora & fauna. Eyes will be peeled searching for crocodiles along the riverbank, and howler monkeys up above in the trees. A rich experience. Once the logging and commercial highway of Belize, the river contrasts between small settlements and stretches where the feeling is one of remoteness, perhaps even discovery.

Located 35 miles from Belize City on the Old Northern Highway, Altun Ha (Rock Stone Water)is a great example of a Maya ceremonial and trading site. It was here that Dr. David Pendergast was to uncover what is considered to be perhaps the most precious of all Mayan artifacts, the Jade Head representing Kinich Ahau the Sun God.
